2011 Mast Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep, hedonistic color visually articulates this fragrant spice box of complexity: grilled meat, white pepper, celery seed, cardamom, and mocha. Vibrant acidity provides balance to a solid core of tannins: body is slightly lean on entry, unfolding to dense, earthy grip. A chewy, dark fruit finish with an essence of espresso clings seductively.
Jack Mast was the third generation of his family to own and carefully tend the Mast Ranch; in his whole adult life, Jack spent only one night away from his beloved farmstead. Situated on the western side of the Yountville Appellation, the alluvial bench land of the Mayacamas Mountains imparts traits unique to this acclaimed terroir: gravelly soil interspersed with sand, loam, and clay; hillside irrigation, and cool bay winds that provide perfect temperate balance for Cabernet Sauvignon vines. A staff favorite for its structured earthiness, we raise a toast to Paul Hobbs and Julian Gonzalez for another world class Cabernet of exceptional finesse.
